Second Week of Advent – EN

The second Sunday of Advent is December 7, 2025. The second candle on the Advent wreath represents Peace and is also purple. Often called the “Bethlehem Candle,” this candle reminds us of Mary and Joseph’s journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem before Mary gave birth to Jesus. It also builds on the meaning of the Prophecy Candle, recalling that after the division, destruction, and dispersion of the kingdom in the Old Testament, there might finally be peace on Earth.

“May we be in this world a ray of light which shone forth from Bethlehem.” – Pope Francis

The Feast of the Immaculate Conception, The Feast of Juan Diego, & The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe

Many Feast Days occur during the second week of Advent and one of them is a Holy Day of Obligation. We will focus on just three of them for this week:

The Feast of the Immaculate Conception: This feast is on December 8, 2025 and is an opportunity to celebrate the Catholic doctrine that Mary was conceived completely free of original sin. The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is a Holy Day of Obligation. Our parish will be holding Mass for this Holy Day of Obligation on Monday, December 8, 2025 (9:00 AM, 12:00 PM, 6:00 PM & 7:30 PM-Español) Additionally, you could celebrate by praying a Rosary or singing Marian hymns like “Ave Maria.” If you would like to learn more about what Catholics believe about Mary, click here.

The Feast of Juan Diego: This feast day is held on December 9, 2025. The Feast of Juan Diego and the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which fall on separate days, can be celebrated in similar ways since we are—in essence—celebrating the same feast. You can learn more about Juan Diego here.

The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe: This Feast Day is held on December 12, 2025. Our Lady of Guadalupe is a Catholic title of the Virgin Mary, harkening back to the Marian apparition to St. Juan Diego on Tepeyac Hill (now outside of México City). In Spanish, she is known as Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe or La Virgen de Guadalupe. “Our Lady” is a title given to Mary, signifying respect and recognition of her as our Mother. “Guadalupe” refers to the place in México in which Mary appeared to St. Juan Diego. Our parish will be having a celebration to remember this day on December 12, 2025 at 4:00 AM. We will also have Regular Mass (9:00 AM), Mass for pregnant women (12:00 PM), Procesión, Mariachis (7:00 PM),  Apariciones y Misa (7:30 PM). You can learn more about Our Lady of Guadalupe here.

Parish Activities for the Second Week of Advent

Nativity Village Display: If you haven’t had a chance to take a look up close at this detailed display in the Sanctuary, plan on arriving early for Mass and take some time to enjoy this.

Live Nativity: The Live Nativity will be happening on Sunday, December 14. Be sure to gather your whole family and have a picture taken with the live nativity.

Advent Penance Service: During this holy season of Advent, we are invited to prepare our hearts through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Take this opportunity to return to the Lord and receive His healing grace and peace in the mercy of the Lord. Our parish will be hosting an Advent Penance Service on Tuesday, December 9 at 7:00 PM. (If this date & time don’t work for you, check out dates for other parishes in the Raleigh Diocese – click here.)

Home Activities for the Second Week of Advent

Make a Special Meal for the Feasts of Juan Diego and Our Lady of Guadalupe : Plan a family tamalada, a special traditional Mexican dinner or bake some Mexican wedding cookies. A great activity for kids would be to make their own Juan Diego Paper Tilma (Here is a link for some inspiration on how to do that.)

The Little Blue Book: In the Little Blue Book for December 9, 2025 (page 24) the book shares a story about “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” In the book it reads, “When Linus emerges onstage to share the real meaning of Christmas, he does so with his trusty blanket in hand. But when he says the words, “fear not,” he drops his false sense of security, his trusty blanket, symbolizing that Jesus frees us from our fears.” Read this daily reading as a family and watch “A Charlie Brown Christmas” on tv together. (If you haven’t picked up a Little Blue Book, look for a copy at our parish.)
