First Week of Advent – EN

From homes to churches, schools, and offices – the Advent wreath is a common symbol of the liturgical season. Its purpose is literally to light the way to the true Light of the World.

The circular wreath, typically made of evergreen leaves like pine or fir, represents God’s infinite and everlasting love for us. It also holds four candles to light each Sunday of Advent.

The first Sunday of Advent is November 30, 2025. The first Sunday of Advent is also the beginning of the new liturgical year when we transition into a new liturgical cycle. On the first Sunday of Advent in 2025, we’ll transition from cycle C to cycle A.

“May we be in this world a ray of that light which shone forth from Bethlehem, bringing joy and peace to the hearts of all men and women.” – Pope Francis

First Candle of Advent &

The Feast of Saint Andrew the Apostle

The first candle of the Advent wreath represents Hope – the first Sunday of Advent not only leads us to anticipate the birth of Christ but celebrate the beginning of a new liturgical season as well. It is purple, the primary color of Advent and a color symbolizing royalty. Sometimes called the “Prophecy Candle,” the first candle harkens us back to Isaiah’s foretelling of the birth of Christ and all of the promise God gave us in the Old Testament that would be fulfilled by the birth of Jesus.

Advent always begins on a Sunday and includes three other Sundays leading up to Christmas. Traditionally, this first Sunday of Advent is always the Sunday closest to the Feast of St. Andrew the Apostle on November 30, whether before or after. This year, the Feast of St. Andrew is on a Wednesday, so the first Sunday of Advent precedes the apostle’s feast day.

(Start the St. Andrew Christmas Novena on November 30.)

Parish Activities for the First Week of Advent

Christmas Giving Tree: Select a gift tag from the tree beginning Sunday, November 23 and purchase the desired gift, wrap it and return it to church by December 7 to help a parish family in need.

Blessing of the Advent Wreath: A Blessing of the Advent Wreath will be held during Mass on Sunday, November 30, 2025. (Bring your wreath from home to be blessed.)

Weekday Mass: Add a weekday Mass to your routine during Advent. Daily Mass can allow us to experience the liturgy in a new way, breaking from the normal Sunday routine. You arrive at church on a different day, likely at a different time, and perhaps with a different group of parishioners. (Weekday Mass is offered on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursday & Fridays at 9:00 AM or Tuesdays at 6:30 PM)

Home Activities for the First Week of Advent

Advent Wreath & Candles and The Little Blue Book: Make it part of your pre-dinnertime routine during advent to light the candle for that week and read the daily pages from “The Little Blue Book.” A good start for this first week of Advent is to begin the week with some quiet time on page 5 of the book titled, “Make Room in the Inn (of Your Heart) for Jesus.”

Advent Calendar: Advent calendars that fully capture the season of Advent begin with the first Sunday in Advent and span the entire season until Christmas Eve. Advent calendars involve some sort of activity each day, even if it’s as simple as reading a short Bible verse or quote. Often, Advent calendars contain an element of opening or unwrapping something to reveal a small surprise. The USCCB also creates a calendar for the entire stretch of Advent, starting with the first Sunday of Advent and spanning the four weeks that follow. Click Here to go to that link. Sometimes the best Advent calendars are the ones you make yourself. Create a simple Advent calendar yourself by filling out this blank calendar with one prayer intention, quote or scripture verse each day. Saint Anne’s Helper also has a great do-it-yourself calendar that is great for kids. Keep it semi-homemade by ordering an Advent calendar kit that you can customize for yourself.

Saint Nicholas Activities: St. Nicholas is the patron saint of children, bakers, brides, unmarried women, grooms, sailors and travelers. Because he was persecuted for his faith, we can pray to him on behalf of all people who are being persecuted around the world On December 6, 2025. Here is a link to some family St. Nicholas ideas.
