Lent offers families the opportunity to grow together in their faith. It is the perfect time to pray more as a family, “fast” from screens and spend more quality time together, and find ways to give to those less fortunate. What better way to start some quality time than cooking together? And who doesn’t like pancakes?
Shrove Tuesday
A long time ago it was common practice during Lent to give up many foods as a Lenten practice of penance. People in Britain would give up the eggs and butter in their kitchen, so the day before Ash Wednesday would be the perfect time to use up all of those ingredients. That way they didn’t go bad during the long weeks of Lent. They called this day Shove Tuesday because Lent was a time to be “shriven” or cleansed of sin.
