Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Welcome to the Season of Lent!
This is the time when God calls us to recognize his mercy, his blessings, his words of wisdom and invites us to make our lives a way to respond to his revelation, to live his love in our hearts and in our sharing with our neighbor.
This is a great opportunity for us, as part of a family, to work together to renew our homes to the rhythm of God and the style of his love. And so, we realize that so many superfluous and unnecessary things occupy our hearts, our minds, and our desires and that they have made us forget God, His Kingdom, our neighbor and what we truly need to do to be able to relate to God.
Now we see the season of Lent not only as something that forbids us but as a time of renunciation, of sacrifice, of repentance. But to make this season experiential, it is necessary to accept that our life needs to pass from our sin to grace. We are asked to value who and how our sins have been forgiven, our weaknesses, our miseries, and our unfaithfulness to God, to our neighbor, and to ourselves.
That is why this time is a time of encounter: first with God, by renewing our condition of being his children through the grace of his Son Jesus Christ. This is true for those of us who listen to Him, follow Him, accept Him in our hearts, and count on Him in our lives. The celebrations of this season are rich in expressions of mercy, of the good and just Father who is always attentive in giving us the best of himself so that we may have the fullness of life. Our prayer, our purpose to be better, our Lenten practices will be meaningless unless they are born of a true encounter with the God of love and mercy.
In the same way, our relationship with others should be the fruit of the encounter with God and must be the way we respond to his divine mercy: his love, his compassion. His mercy must be found in those works that reach the lives of others, especially those most in need.
Let’s not think about giving what we have left over to those who do not have just to make us feel good. It does not save us or calm our conscience. On the contrary, we must take time and give up our selfishness to share with others. We could share with God by spending a bit of time in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament of the Eucharist and ask for his grace, his love and his generosity to share with our family, to reconcile ourselves with those who are fighting with us, to have time to listen to the children, to the parents, to the friends, to those who always need us.
The fruit of all this is also in the encounter with oneself. How much we are in need of seeing ourselves through God’s gaze. Allowing his Word to question us, to speak to us, to challenge us to change. How much we need to acknowledge our selfishness, our foolishness, and all the things that affect our family, our community, and ourselves.
It is only necessary to contemplate Christ on the Cross and feel all his love for each one, as his silence speaks to our life, as his pain is found in our society, as the indifference of so many people who hurt the heart of God himself. Let us make this a time that helps us to return to God to celebrate the Paschal triumph!

Muy apreciados hermanos en Cristo:
¡Bienvenidos al Tiempo de la Cuaresma!
Este es el tiempo en el que Dios nos llama a reconocer su misericordia, sus bendiciones, sus palabras de sabiduría y nos invita a hacer de nuestra vida, una manera de responder a su revelación, para vivir su amor en nuestros corazones y en nuestro compartir con el prójimo.
Esta es la gran oportunidad para que, como parte de una familia, trabajemos juntos para renovar nuestros hogares al ritmo de Dios y al estilo de su amor. Y así darnos cuenta que tantas cosas superfluas e innecesarias ocupan nuestros corazones, nuestras mentes y nuestros deseos y que nos han hecho olvidar a Dios, su Reino, a nuestro prójimo y en lo que realmente debemos hacer para poder relacionarnos con Dios.
Ahora vemos el tiempo de la cuaresma no solo como algo que nos prohíbe sino como un tiempo de renuncia, de sacrificio, de arrepentimiento. Pero para poder hacer este tiempo como algo vivencial, se requiere aceptar que nuestra vida necesita pasar de nuestro pecado a la gracia, se nos pide valorar quién y cómo nos ha perdonado nuestros pecados, nuestras debilidades, nuestras miserias y nuestras infidelidades a Dios, a nuestro prójimo, y a nosotros mismos.
Por eso este tiempo es un tiempo de encuentro: primero con Dios, al renovar nuestra condición de ser sus hijos, por la gracia de Hijo Jesucristo. Esto es verdad para aquellos que lo escuchamos, lo seguimos, lo aceptamos en nuestro corazón y contamos con El en nuestra vida. Las celebraciones de este tiempo son ricas en expresiones de misericordia, del Padre bueno, justo y siempre atento a darnos lo mejor de si mismo para que tengamos la plenitud de la vida. Nuestra oración, nuestro propósito de ser mejores, nuestras practicas cuaresmales no tendrían sentido sino nacen de un encuentro verdadero con el Dios del amor y de la misericordia.
De la misma forma, nuestra relación con los demás, debe ser el fruto del encuentro con Dios y debe ser la manera como respondemos a su misericordia divina: su amor, su compasión, su misericordia deben ser obras que lleguen a la vida de los otros, especialmente a los más necesitados.
No pensemos en dar de lo que nos sobra a los que no tienen para solo sentirnos bien. Esto no nos salva ni calma nuestra consciencia. Al contrario es, sacar tiempo y renunciar a nuestros egoísmos para compartir con los demás. Podríamos compartir con Dios pasando un buen rato de adoración al Santísimo Sacramento de la Eucaristía y pedir su gracia, su amor y su generosidad para compartir con nuestra familia, para reconciliarnos con los que nos estamos peleando, para tener tiempo de escuchar a los hijos, a los padres de familia, a los amigos, a los que siempre nos necesitan.
El fruto de todo esto también está en el encuentro con uno mismo. Cuánto hace falta podernos ver con la mirada de Dios a nosotros mismos. Permitirle que su palabra que nos cuestione, nos hable, nos rete a un cambio. Cuánto hace falta aceptar nuestros egoísmos, nuestras necedades y todas las cosas que afectan a nuestra familia, a nuestra comunidad, y a nosotros mismos.
Solo hace falta contemplar a Cristo en la Cruz y sentir todo su amor por cada uno, como su silencio habla a nuestra vida, como su dolor se encuentra en nuestra sociedad, como la indiferencia de tantas personas duele en el corazón del mismo Dios. ¡Hagamos que este tiempo nos ayude a volver a Dios, para celebrar el triunfo Pascual!
