The mission of the Altar Server Ministry is to assist the priest at the altar with reverence, with dignity, and with faith. Candidates for this ministry must have received their First Holy Communion and regularly participate in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, as well as receive the Eucharist on a regular basis. Candidates for this ministry should be mature enough to understand their responsibilities and to carry them out well and with appropriate reverence.
Typical duties that altar servers are expected to carry out during Mass include: carrying the processional cross, holding missal and/or Book of the Chair, setting up the altar during The Offertory, assisting with the Reception of Gifts, assisting during the Lavabo (Washing of Hands), ringing of bells, and offering assistance to the priest as necessary.
